Your home in diani beach
We offer the privacy and freedom of your own home (without the chores) so it is completely up to you how you spend your time. You decide when and what you want to eat and what to do, whether water sports, beauty treatments or excursions (see 'Location' for information on local activities).
You may find that all you want to do is relax in our three acres of peaceful tropical gardens on the shores of the sparkling sapphire Indian Ocean. In that case, you won’t be disturbed, except for the occasional visiting monkey jumping on the roof or by the cry of a bushbaby in the night, but the waves kissing the shore should lull you back to sleep.
Fishermen bring fresh fish and seafood to the door from the landing site next door. You can buy the day's catch or make a special order. Seasonal fruit and vegetables are also brought to the door.
There is a supermarket which stocks basics and some kiosks selling fruit and vegetables at the top of the road, a short walk away.
There are four large supermarkets and a number of banks, ATM machines and gift shops along the beach road, all within 5 or 10 minutes drive. We can stock the house in advance of your arrival and, during your stay, there is a car available to take you shopping by arrangement. Alternatively, the chef can shop for you. Taxis and tuk tuks are also plentiful and reasonable. For those who would rather leave the catering decisions in our hands, we can offer a catered option charged on a meal by meal basis: Table d'hôte with John and Hilary in their home or served in your own house or on the lawns overlooking the beach. The choice is yours...
We have a little gift shop on site where you can find presents for your loved ones, or yourself. We try to differentiate ourselves from the local curio shops by stocking original, innovative and resourceful things being made locally as well as beautiful things from across the Indian Ocean as traders on the Swahili coast have from time immemorial.
Beach/tennis shoes are needed for walking on the reef as there are sea urchins and it is advisable to wear a T shirt when snorkeling. Goggling masks and snorkels and a cold box for drinks/picnic can be provided.
The East African coast is a malarial area and prophylactics are recommended. As with all holiday destinations, medical advice from your doctor and medical insurance are advised. A doctor is on 24 hour call at a small well-equipped private hospital nearby.
Your personal maid and chef usually arrive at 8am but please feel free to work out a timetable which suits you. The maid will clean the house, make the beds and do the laundry; just leave your dirty clothes in the laundry baskets provided. The cook will discuss menus with you and write shopping lists or even do the shopping for you. The staff are trained professionally and their aim is to make your holiday as stress free as possible.
Good food is important to us. Our chefs are very adaptable and will soon understand your requirements. We also offer suggestions of locally influenced specialities cooked with spices, coconut and tamarind if you would like to try something new.
A complimentary starter pack of basic provisions such as salad dressing, all spices, tea, coffee and sugar is in the house for your convenience on arrival. Lavatory paper, soap and cleaning materials are provided throughout your stay.
There are a number of restaurants nearby which we can recommend.
If you will be arriving late you can choose to have a meal prepared for you and arrange breakfast. If you would like the house stocked before you arrive please fill out the shopping list and email it to us.
Wifi is available via internet modem and a local mobile telephone is available by request.
Children are welcome and the services of an ayah (nanny) can be arranged in advance if required.
